Is 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' getting a revival?
These days it seems like beloved canceled TV shows are like vampires: constantly coming back from the dead.
But is the mother of all vampire shows next on the revival docket? At a recent reunion for the 20th anniversary of the premiere, the cast of the seminal teen horror classic Buffy the Vampire Slayercovered all sorts of topics during their EWphotoshoot, including the possibility of the show's return.
The show's creator and general nerd god Joss Whedon didn't outright nix the idea:
“I’ve been trying deliberately to move forward and do something a little bit different. But yeah, the great thing is everybody looks great, and the other great thing is the show is about growing up. If we did it with these guys, they’d be the age they basically are. They’d probably play a little younger because they can do that. But yeah, you’d see somebody going through their life at a different stage. It wouldn’t be like, ‘I can’t believe we’re still in high school! I wear Depends!’”
The cast's answers, unsurprisingly, were mixed. Fan favorite James Marsters would happily join a new show only if Whedon was at the helm, and former Buffyand Angelstar Charisma Carpenter noted, "It would just make so many people happy.”
But Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Geller, is in the 'no' revival camp. “I’m sure the fans are incredibly disappointed to hear that answer, but I think they’d be more disappointed if we created something and it didn’t live up to the expectation... And I love that it can live in comic form and graphic novels."
To echo Geller's point, Simon & Schuster recently announced a new spinoff book series called Slayer to be published in 2018.
Somewhere in the middle of those two camps is everyone's favorite witch, Alyson Hannigan, who said, “I think we should do the Buffy cartoon.”
She was, of course, referring to the failed animated series that Whedon and co pitched to Fox in 2002. You can watch the promo for the series, which was never picked up, below:
While the now-20-years-older crew behind the series may be mixed on reanimating the show (sometimes with literal animation), Buffystill lives on.
While the series is set to leave Netflix, it remains on Hulu, and the comic series and upcoming books show that you can't keep a good Slayer down.
